About Barney

BARNEY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Barney Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of August 2026 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 11 lbs Gets Along With: Barney does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog. We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster homeSpecial adoption considerations: Barney was rescued from a hoarding situation in South Carolina. He has not been well socialized with new people and has lived his whole life with other dogs. New nosies, cars, bikes, and other things may create fear and anxiety. He will need a patient adopter who can give him time to come out of his shell and learn that the world is a wonderful and welcoming place. And because he is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show her the ropes.Barney is Looking For: His forever home, filled with snuggles and opportunities to see the world! One where he is a cherished part of a family. He's very sweet, and SO ready to be a Real Dog.Extra patient and loving humans who introduce him to new places and people at his pace are exactly what she wants! Along with quality kibble, a cushy dog bed, and endless snuggles. You know what you get out of adopting a dog like that? An incredibly sweet and grateful dog who gives you all those adoring gazes, all the love and loyalty in his body, for all hisdays. What do you say? Is he the one for you? Are you his new chapter and forever home? What My Foster Says About Me: Barney is a fluffy, gentle boy who is looking for his happily ever after! Rescued from a hoarding situation of over 100 dogs, he didn't get much early human socialization, but his progress over six weeks in foster care has been amazing. He arrived in foster care shut down and frozen, not walking on leash. Now he absolutely loves being in the great outdoors and happily explores the city on-leash. He loves sunbathing, loves sniffing, loves seeing what he missed out on in his first few years of life. He is still hesitant when new humans approach - right now, a polite sniff of a hand is enough for him. But he is also slowly bonding with his foster mom (and has fallen asleep in her lap!). He will surely continue to come out of his shell. With dogs, there is no shell - he loves other dogs. When with a like-minded dog, he's all about wrestling, bitey face, and rousing games of chase - his energy and enthusiasm for play is clear. He has also recently discovered a passion for playing with toys and wants to try them all now. His foster mother has seen Barney watching her, watching others with so much yearning, so much uncertainty. He wants to walk through his home with all the confidence of a well-loved dog, and has been learning from the resident dogs in his foster home. He will continue to need a friendly, welcoming resident dog who can model social behavior for him - and show him how amazing it is to love and be loved by humans. Building trust with him will take time, consistency, and patient understanding. Seeing the joyful dog he was always meant to be he continues to gain confidence will be so worth it.
